Interviewer: What are the benefits of Ashwagandha?
Dr. Stern: Ashwagandha is an Asian herb. It's an adaptogen, and an adaptogen is an herb that doesn't push you to the left. It doesn't push you to the right. It basically allows your body to stay balanced and centered.
So if you drink coffee, it's always going to give you this lift. I mean, that's what coffee does. It works in one way - where ashwagandha - if you're anxious, will help calm you down a little bit. If you're feeling excited or if you're feeling kind of down or a little fatigued, will give you a little bit of an energy lift.
So, ashwagandha is a great adaptogenic herb, and really, its target is the adrenal system.
It supports the adrenal glands and helps nourish them. It also is really amazing at supporting thyroid function. I have my relax nighttime formula that's designed to support the adrenal glands and decrease nighttime cortisol levels. I made a few different samples.
One of my samples had ashwagandha. There are lot of products out there that use ashwagandha in evening time. I chose not to use ashwagandha, as much as I love it, for a couple of reasons.
1) If you are taking ashwagandha, it has the potential of giving you a bit of an energy lift if you're a little bit on the fatigued side. So if you're taking it at nighttime and all of a sudden, you feel more energy, that's the last thing I want with the nighttime formula.
So, the number one reason why I didn't use ashwagandha is because I don't like it at nighttime. I like it in the morning time, because in the morning, when people have adrenal imbalance, their cortisol levels tend to be a little bit low.
Ashwagandha's great at giving it a natural lift, so now you're not so reliant on coffee or caffeine products. You can use ashwagandha to give you that lift, nourish your adrenal glands and give you a little bit of energy.
2) There are other amazing herbs out there that are incredible for the adrenal glands that are really are not so designed to give you an up or down effect. They're more designed to calm that cortisol down.
The two most famous herbs are magnolia and holy basil. So that's what I've put in my relax formula. So, I love ashwagandha. I just don't like it for the night time.
