Dr. Stern: So, when you exercise, you're taxing your body. When you go to work, when you're stressed, you're taxing your body. When you're running around and you're busy and you're up and down, not sleeping great, you're taxing your body. So, as an athlete, whether you're a professional athlete or you're just an athlete who has another job and you're trying to increase your performance, you are taxing your body on a daily basis.

The adrenal glands produce something called cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone that has a negative impact on our immune system, has a negative impact on our sleep cycle, has a negative impact on our thyroid gland, has a negative impact on our testosterone production. Basically, it has a negative impact even on our serotonin production, which is the feel good chemical. The adrenal glands being nourished and healthy and producing the proper amount of cortisol is very important (some cortisol is needed, but in a proper amount).

If you're over producing your cortisol, it's going to effect your energy levels, it's going to effect your mood, it's going to effect your thyroid gland, how you burn fat and your metabolism. It's also going to effect your ability to heal since it has a negative impact on your immune system. It has a negative impact on everything. So, the adrenal glads and the proper release of hormones are super critical to an athlete to make sure they're functioning at the optimal level they want to be functioning at.
